In 1796, Agha Mohammad Khan of the Qajar dynasty chose Tehran as Iran's capital in order to keep near to Iran's Caucasus holdings before being split from Iran as a result of the Russo-Persian Wars, and to escape the contending factions of the previously governing Iranian dynasties. Tehran is Iran's 32nd national capital, having been relocated multiple times throughout its history. The city was home to Iran's last two imperial dynasties, the Qajars and Pahlavis. It houses several historical treasures, including the royal complexes of Golestan, Sa'dabad, and Niavaran, as well as the country's most prominent modern governmental structures.Large-scale destruction and reconstruction began in the 1920s, and throughout the twentieth century, Tehran has been a destination for huge migrations from all around Iran. The Azadi Tower, a memorial erected during the Pahlavi period, and the Milad Tower, the world's 17th highest freestanding building, which was built in 2007, are two of the city's most recognised landmarks. The Tabiat Bridge, which was finished in 2014, is the city's third current icon.
