Visitors to Sri Lanka enjoy the beaches, hill country, wildlife, and the cities but the historic aspects of the country are sometimes overlooked. This video visits two ancient capitals which should be major attractions for Sri Lankan visitors today. Both are UNESCO World Heritage sites and both provide insights into two civilizations that had a major influence on Sri Lankan culture. These, together with Anuradhapura, form the cultural heartland of Sri Lanka.
Ruins of very ancient buildings, palaces, pagodas, and reservoirs bear evidence of a prosperous era in the country's history. Sigiriya was established around 477AD and was briefly the capital of much of Sri Lanka before the King died and the capital was abandoned. After the destruction of Anuradhapura in 993, Polonnaruwa was established as the capital of the Chola kingdom in the latter part of the 10th century. For three centuries, the ancient city of Polonnaruwa served as the capital for both the Chola and Sinhalese Kingdoms.
If you don't have your own vehicle you’ve got the option of exploring the ancient city of Polonnaruwa either by tuk-tuk or by bicycle. At Sigiriya you walk and climb.
Many companies operate tours from Colombo to this area. If you want to be independent, you need to travel to Sigiriya from Colombo or Kandy by bus and there are no direct services. From Colombo, the number 15 bus to Anuradhapura or number 48 to Kaduruwela are the best options; alternatively, you’d board number 49 to Trinco and get down either at Dambulla or Habrana. From Habrana, you’d take a 3-wheeler to Sigiriya. There is a daily bus from Colombo to Polonnaruwa and there are three trains daily.
