Superman Analogue: Supergirl (Kara Zor-El)

Описание к видео Superman Analogue: Supergirl (Kara Zor-El)

Kara Zor-El was one of the most interesting Silver and Bronze Age DC Superhero and now has the chance to continue her career of heroism!

Original Text - I had intended to build up to this one, but I was having a hard time describing characters without referencing the classic model. So let's talk today for my #SupermanAnalogue about Kara Zor El, Cousin of Superman.
When people talk about Supergirl, they usually mean this one. Kara Zor-El was from Krypton but made it to Earth after her family initially survived for a time adrift in the domed Argo City in space. Eventually she came to Earth and Superman hid her away as a secret weapon.
Eventually she made her own way, staring in her own adventures and adopting a variety of period appropriate outfits.
One thing I always loved was her relationship with the future "descendant" of Braniac, the heroic Braniac 5 of the Legion of Superheroes (hi @LegionBlog and @kara_querl )
As time-lost members of warring houses, this was a delightful while wholesome version of Romeo and Juliet for the pulpy sci-fi set.
Even if complications arose, it was such a nice touch. We tend to look back on Silver Age books as flat and simple, but this was such a refutation of that point.
Anyway, this is where it gets a little sad. When DC cleaned house in the 80s, Supergirl died saving her cousin during an attack on an evil force from another reality. It's a goddamn brutal fight and the weight of the conflict is palpable.
While Flash is often remembered as the big casualty of the Crisis, Supergirl doesn't even get the dignity of people remembering her loss as she's shortly after wiped from continuity. Still we get a nice send-off, seeing Superman weep for her loss.
For a time, this was it in comics for Kara Zor-El, but her presence in outside media going forward cemented her role as THE Supergirl.
It began with the Helen Slater Supergirl in the 80s in the wake of the Christopher Reeve Superman movies. While not fondly remembered, it was remembered.
The Animated DCU featured Kara In-Ze who was just an adopted cousin instead of a biological one for Superman. For all purposes, the character is just the adaptation of the Kara Zor-El for the medium.
We have a version on Smallville too...
And finally, she's the basis for the current Supergirl TV Show. No joke, I freaking love this series. If you like Superman related material, you need to watch this. @the_moviebob did a good video on the show:    • In Bob We Trust: SUPERGIRL MAKES IT L...
It's truly inspirational and such a breath of fresh air for what DC has been putting out for Superman properties of late.
Sure enough, the various media led to Kara being reintroduced decades later in the main DCU. Since then, she's been a major player and THE Supergirl of the books. I was dubious at first because of the excellent send off to the character, but I've grown to love the latest tales.
Supergirl in away is the best of Superman and Kara Zor-El is the Apex of that idea. She is willing to sacrifice everything to do what's right but never gives up hope.
However, she's not the Supergirl that I grew up with...
