What started as just a strange, deformed piece of walnut wood turned into one of the most unique bowls I’ve ever made.
It had cracks, rot, worm holes, and even two broken branches on top. At first, I thought of splitting it into two smaller bowls — but instead, I challenged myself to make one big, single-piece creation.

I peeled off the bark, discovered heavy rot inside, and carefully carved it out with gouges and rasps. The bottom was so decayed that I had to remove it completely. The two broken branches on top reminded me of a whale’s tail — so I carved it to bring that vision to life.

After attaching a new piece of wood to the front and carving it, I burned the outside for a dramatic finish and coated the inside with food-safe oil. The result: a one-of-a-kind rustic bowl with striking grains, textures, and a story of resilience.
