Hans Christian Andersen's original telling of The Little Mermaid is probably very different from the one you know. The mermaid's transformation is far less pleasant, there is no mention of true love's kiss, and what is she doing with that knife? A close reading and a look into the life of Hans Christian Andersen, a liminal figure caught between two societies, shows a powerful message that applies to each of us.
