This W51 was made in 1956 by Deutsche Telephon Werke (DeTeWe) for export to the UK. 'Modernphone' is stamped on the number card holder for importer Modern Telephones, still operating today and formed in 1945 as part of the Shipton Group, which included early intercom maker British Home and Office Telephones.

The W51 uses the circuit of the W48 table set, which has the external shape of the Siemens & Halske W38, the W51 similarly echoes the wall version of the W38. Although marked 'W51' a German Post Office style designation, the Bundespost seem to have preferred their W49 which could be used as a table or wall phone.

Apparently nicknamed the 'Deer Antler', the W51 was generally only available in black. Ivory sets such as this one were less robust and the dial fingerplate sadly does have a section missing and there are clacks elsewhere in the case.

This set has the Earth Recall button usually found on telephones used on Private Automatic Exchanges (PAXs).
