Dzanga-Sangha gorilla twins turn four

The first-ever twins born to habituated gorillas in the Dzanga-Sangha Protected Area are now four years old. Gorilla twins are extremely rare, but the survival of Inguka and Inganda brings hope that it is possible for other gorilla twins to survive in the future. 🦍 🦍Western lowland gorillas are critically endangered and face serious threats from poaching, disease, and habitat loss across Central Africa.

More than two decades ago, WWF launched Dzanga-Sangha’s gorilla habituation program in the Central African Republic. The program provided local communities with new employment opportunities. Most recently, WWF is working to sustain benefits to the community despite the global travel restrictions caused by COVID-19.

Footage for this video was captured in the fall of 2019. Even before COVID-19, masks were used to protect the habituated gorillas against transmission of diseases from humans.
