On the road between Camagüey and Trinidad, we stop at Sancti Spiritus for lunch and visit the city founded by Diego Velázquez at the beginning of the 16th century. Political, economic and military center of the region, Sancti Spiritus was enriched with sumptuous mansions in the 17th and 18th centuries. Nowadays, this city is not well known to tourists who ignore its colonial center even though it is classified as a “national monument”. In the outskirts of Trinidad, we enter the Los Ingenios Valley, a 40 km long valley dotted with haciendas, slave houses and around 75 ruined sugar factories. These sugar factories which operated in the 19th century gave their name to the Valley and employed more than 11,000 slaves.
