Fuzz Before or After Overdrive?
I’m currently getting ready to do a quick European tour with the artist Emlyn and have decided to sub out a couple of pedals into my board from last time. If you’ve never seen my pedalboard, it’s a tight ship. I spent 8 hours getting this thing neat and tidy. So I have good news and bad news. Good news is I’m swapping the same effects: a drive for a drive and a fuzz for a fuzz, and they fit in the same spots that I had those pedals before. Here’s the bad news- I’ve been researching a little more on signal flow and found that a lot of you think fuzz should come before overdrive. I’m not sure why this is news to me, but in my head, I’ve always thought that drives, distortions, and fuzzes should just go in the order of least distorted to most distorted. And I think that’s generally true except for when it comes to fuzz apparently. Since fuzz is old school tech, it tends to behave better when at the front of your circuit. Noooooooo.

Today I want to test it out before I dual lock these bad boys down forever. Or at least until I decide to change pedals again… so lets put it to the test. Does fuzz really sound better before drives?

Ok ok ok. That actually didn’t turn out the way I thought it would. Like I figured since sooooo many people were adamant that fuzz before overdrive is the only way, that that would indeed sound better. But I didn’t think it was that clear cut. First off, when you have the overdrive first, it actually seems to color the fuzz more. There was a more pronounced high end and a lot of the low end is sucked up. It’s clearer at the cost of losing a little bit of your body. Wouldn’t say it sounded bad though.

Fuzz before overdrive is much richer and it seemed that the natural sound of the fuzz pedal was more preserved. It’s thicker, sludgier, grungier. The negative here was there was soooo much more distortion that I was starting to have feedback issues. But even with that, I preferred the round sound of the fuzz before the overdrive, so I guess I have a lot of work to do on my pedalboard… alas. But what did you think?
