How to Set Up Lights for Stunning Black on Black Product Photography

Many photographers find it challenging to shoot black on black product shots. In this how-to video, Urs Recher and Karl Taylor demonstrate how you can improve your product photography and achieve impressive results with just a few tips and tricks.

The main task in this photoshoot was to separate the black cosmetic product and the black background. The key here is to create a rim light effect with beautiful gradations around the cosmetic product to make it stand out in the final image.

Next to learning how to correctly position your lights, Urs and Karl also explain how to get rid of flare using flags.

The light setup in this photoshoot was quite simple. Urs and Karl only used a Siros 400 S and a Siros 800 S. Both lights had Softboxes attached to them – a 35 x 60 and a 120 x 180.
