Dubbed one of the most ambitious and talked-about aviation projects of the decade, the 7 9 7 was expected to fill a crucial gap in Boeing's lineup—the very spot the aging 7 5 7 and 7 6 7 left behind. Targeting the 250 to 270 seat market, this aircraft was envisioned in two variants, larger than the 7 3 7 Max 10 but smaller than the 7 8 7 Dash 8. This new mid-size aircraft would be perfect for high-traffic short-haul routes, such as Melbourne to Sydney or Chicago to New York. With a projected range of 4,500 to 5,000 nautical miles, the new Boeing jet could even surpass the A3 21 XLR, making it capable of covering most transatlantic routes and a number of longer domestic flights.
