You'll be given your first ship very early into Starfield. After the first few introductory missions, you'll be set free to explore the galaxy to your heart's content. Flying your ship and the inevitable combat to follow is one of the core mechanics in the game, giving you tons of options of how to handle other ships they come across.

In the Tech menu of your skill tree is the Targeting Control Systems skill. Unlocking this skill will allow you to lock onto enemy ships and focus your weapons on specific components of a ship to disable it in combat. Locking onto an enemy ship can be done by aiming at it for a few seconds while the percentage fills up, then pressing either "X" on controller or "R" on keyboard. Destroying a specific component of a ship, such as its shields, will leave that ship without the use of that component for the rest of the battle. The targeting will only happen for a short amount of time before regular combat resumes, so be sure to have your weapons fully charged to take full advantage of the targeting time.

If you want to board an enemy ship, you'll need to lock onto a ship and specifically target its engines. Make sure you target the actual engines and not the Grav Drive, as they are fundamentally similar but have different effects when destroyed. Destroy an enemy ship's engines, and the marker on the engines will turn red, and you'll receive a notification in the top left corner of the screen indicating their engines are offline. The enemy ship can still turn and shoot but will be unable to move around. Approach the ship and interact with it, pressing "E" on Keyboard or "A" and dock with the ship, pressing "R" on Keyboard or "Y" on controller.
