Limpets, patella vulgate are very interesting creatures that I found to be very common along the algarve coastline. They attach themselves to rocks along the coastline from the high shores all the way to the sublittoral fringe. Very abundant on rocky shorelines they have a characteristic shell lined with irregular radiating ribs. Shells can be up to 6cm long and 5cm wide with a height of 3cm. If you get a chance to spot them while moving the sole of their foot is a yellow, dull orange or brown colour. The foot is very muscular and strong allowing them to hold on tightly to rocks. At low tide the limpet can clamp down to prevent itself from becoming dried out and this also protects them from predator making it very difficult to get then off. When the tide comes in they can move and feed with their tongue also called a 'radula' on algae and seaweed. Limpets have a special place on the rock that they return to after grazing and feeding called a 'home scar'
