President Donald Trump said he ordered a “powerful and deadly” US military strike against Islamic State terrorists in northwest Nigeria, accusing the group of killing innocent Christians in the country. The operation was carried out in Sokoto state in coordination with Nigerian authorities, according to US Africa Command.

AFRICOM said multiple ISIS terrorists were killed after US forces struck camps used as assembly and staging grounds for attacks. A US official told CNN that Tomahawk missiles fired from a Navy vessel were used, while Nigerian officials said GPS-guided precision munitions launched from Reaper drones were also involved. No civilian casualties were reported, though debris fell in nearby communities.

Trump said he delayed the strike so it would fall on Christmas, calling it a “Christmas present,” and vowed further action if attacks continued. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said there was “more to come,” praising cooperation with Nigeria.

Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar said President Bola Tinubu approved the operation and stressed the fight was about protecting innocent Nigerians of all religions, not targeting Muslims. He noted that both Christians and Muslims have been victims of extremist violence in the region.

Security analysts said the strikes may have targeted militant enclaves linked to ISIS or the group Lakurawa, which Nigeria has designated a terrorist organization. Nigeria’s northwest has faced growing insecurity fueled by banditry and jihadist-linked violence, creating a hybrid crime-terrorism threat.

The strike comes as Trump has focused on the plight of Christians in Nigeria, while analysts warn that framing the conflict purely along religious lines does not reflect the complex reality on the ground.
