Synopsis
The story is set a thousand years after a powerful, life-giving Crystal of Truth, the heart of the planet Thra, was damaged. The resulting schism created two distinct races from a single, advanced species known as the urSkeks: the cruel, vulture-like Skeksis, who became the planet's tyrannical rulers, and the peaceful, reclusive Mystics. The Skeksis control the corrupted Dark Crystal and use its power to drain the "essence" from the innocent, simple Podlings and other creatures to prolong their own lives.
An ancient prophecy foretells that a Gelfling will defeat the Skeksis by healing the Crystal before the "Great Conjunction," an alignment of Thra's three suns. Fearing this prophecy, the Skeksis ordered the genocide of all Gelflings, leaving only two survivors, Jen and Kira, who were raised in isolation.
Jen, raised by the Mystics, is tasked by his dying master with finding the Crystal's missing shard and returning it to its proper place. His quest takes him across the dangerous landscapes of Thra, leading him to the observatory of the wise, eccentric astronomer Aughra, who helps him find the shard. During his journey, Jen discovers he is not the only Gelfling survivor when he meets Kira, a brave and resourceful Gelfling girl who was raised by Podlings and has the ability to communicate with animals. Kira and her companion, a small dog-like creature named Fizzgig, join Jen on his perilous journey to the Castle of the Dark Crystal.
As the Great Conjunction approaches, Jen and Kira race against time, pursued by the Skeksis' formidable crab-like army, the Garthim. They reach the castle and fight the Skeksis, who capture Kira and attempt to drain her essence. In the climax, as the three suns align, the Mystics arrive at the castle, and Jen makes his way to the Dark Crystal. Kira sacrifices herself to get the shard to Jen. Jen inserts the shard into the Crystal, which purifies the dark energy and causes the Skeksis and Mystics to merge back into the benevolent, tall urSkeks. The restored urSkeks thank Jen and resurrect Kira, healing Thra and ending the age of chaos.
