The innovation of ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) is that it is portable therapeutic food, which can be made available to families in distressed and food scarce areas. It is a form of outpatient therapy; exactly the right proportion of protein, carbohydrate, and fat that we know promotes optimal growth, and it is supplemented with the vitamins and minerals that are necessary for life and optimal health. It is ready to eat - not just the raw materials - and no refrigeration necessary, as many of the places where malnourished children live there's no electricity. It is shelf stable for 24 months and has been shown to be very successful in transforming lifeless and lethargic children; having them spring back to life. The food is highly concentrated to accommodate the small stomachs of the children while delivering everything the need - that is the innovation that has made it the gold standard for treatment of malnutrition in the world
