Saint Mary of Zion is one of the most far-flung outposts of the ancient Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. Here in the hills above Ocho Rios, Jamaica a community of Jamaicans--both Rastafarians and non-Rastafarians--have been nurturing this congregation since its official establishment in 1972. Inspired by the Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia, they entered the Apostolic and Universal faith of that land when His Majesty sent Abba Mandefro to their island in 1970 to officially establish the Ethiopian Orthodox Mission to Jamaica.

These people, more than any, know the proper relationship that is to be maintained between the Rastafarians and the Ethiopian Orthodox Christians.
