0:07 Here are some easy and quick ways to determine whether your hens are about to start laying eggs. Expect these signs when they are about 16 weeks or older:

0:23 They’re looking like adult hens. They have a fuller and broader appearance, their bodies are putting on more weight.

0:38 Have a look at their comb (on the top) and their wattles (under the beak). These have become larger and a dark red colour, when previously they were small and pale. When they move their head these will start to wiggle and jiggle.

0:53 Have you noticed your hen hanging about the next box area? Before she didn’t seem to take much notice, but now she’s standing outside, sticking her head in, watching your older hens.

1:14 When you reach out to touch your hen and pet her back, does she freeze, squat low with her legs, spread out her wings a bit, and reach out her neck? This is what a hen does to allow a rooster to mate her. She has reached maturity if she is behaving this way.

1:32 Don't need a rooster for eggs

1:45 Are your hens starting to make mature sounds, no more cheeping, but cackling and calling? This is another good sign!
