Assad in Moscow with family – Russian media
The Syrian president has been granted asylum in Russia, Kremlin sources say
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has been granted asylum in Russia and is currently in Moscow with his family, Russian news agencies RIA Novosti and TASS reported on Sunday, citing Kremlin sources. The development comes as Syrian militants seized control of Damascus, effectively ending Assad’s 24-year rule.
The swift capture of the Syrian capital marks the culmination of a large-scale offensive launched by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). Led by a former Al-Qaeda commander and previously known as Jabhat al-Nusra, the group initiated a surprise offensive from the opposition-held province of Idlib in northern Syria last week. Jihadists had previously driven the Syrian Army from the cities of Aleppo, Hama, Homs, and Al-Qusayr at the Lebanese border before advancing into Damascus.
“Assad, along with members of his family, has arrived in Moscow. Russia granted them asylum on humanitarian grounds,” a source told TASS.
Moscow has called for the resumption of UN-led negotiations to resolve the Syrian crisis, TASS reported. Leaders of the Syrian armed opposition have assured the safety of Russian military bases and diplomatic missions operating in Syria, according to Kremlin officials as cited by RIA.
Syrian rebels declare Damascus ‘liberated’ on state TV
The opposition has broadcast their first statement to Syrians on state TV moments ago. Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham (HTS) jihadists and other anti-government militias entered Damascus on Saturday, taking control over the Syrian capital. The Russian Foreign Ministry has confirmed that Bashar Assad has stepped down as Syrian president and left the country following negotiations with armed opposition groups amid the fall of Damascus to Islamist forces. Assad and his family have arrived in Moscow, as Russia has granted them asylum, a source in the Kremlin told agencies TASS and RIA.
Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad al-Jalali has already offered to cooperate “with any leadership chosen by the people,” also claiming that he remains in his home.
HTS, a group led by a former Al-Qaeda commander and previously known as Jabhat al-Nusra, launched a surprise offensive from the opposition-held province of Idlib in northern Syria last week.
“The city of Damascus has been liberated,” said one man, who was dressed in civilian clothes.
“The tyrant Bashar al Assad has been toppled. All the prisoners have been released from the prison of Damascus. We wish all our fighters and citizens preserve and maintain the property of the state of Syria. Long live Syria.”
Syrian opposition captures Public Radio and TV building in Damascus: Report
Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic report, citing opposition sources, that the rebels have taken over the Public Radio and TV building in the Syrian capital.
The Public Radio and TV building is an important, symbolic site in Syria.
Additionally to being in the heart of Damascus, the building was used to announce new governments during Syria’s era or successive coups in the 1950s and ’60s.
Local rebels take most of key southern Syrian region - reports
Rebel forces in southern Syria have reportedly captured most of the Deraa region - the birthplace of the 2011 uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.
A UK-based war monitor reports that the "local factions" were able to take control of many military sites there following "violent battles" with government forces.
According to the Reuters news agency, rebel sources saying they had reached a deal for the army to withdraw and for military officials to be given safe passage to the capital, Damascus - roughly 100km (62 miles) away.
The BBC has been unable to independently verify these reports, which come as Islamist-led rebels in northern Syria claimed to have reached the outskirts of the city of Homs.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based war monitor, said on Friday that the rebels in the south now control more than 90% of the Deraa region and that only the Sanamayn area is still in government hands.
