Описание к видео Psalm 2: Ancient Hebrew: Reconstructed Pronunciation

This time, though, it's of a Hebrew text, and specifically, Psalm 2. The reconstruction of Ancient Hebrew that I used is that promoted by David Steinberg, and I cannot really vouch for any particular merit on its behalf, other than it remains the only reconstruction available to me (Steinberg has sources - but they're difficult to find, even at a university library). Steinberg goes to great lengths to establish exactly what his reconstruction attempts and what it doesn't. He hems and he haws - and with great detail. Those wishing to explore his reconstruction may find his work very quickly by running a quick Google Search.

Now, again, I have to lay some things out here about the pronunciation. This is NOT Modern Hebrew. So, it's NOT going to sound like Modern Hebrew. All the consonants are hard. There are no v's, ch's, or th's. All those developments came later. Pharyngeal phonemes (I pronounce them as ejectives - hopefully I succeed), which do not exist in Modern Hebrew (for the most part), are present in the more ancient language. Also, though it may not actually present itself in this clip, the voiceless alveolar lateral fricative makes an appearance in the language, the double L of Welsh (Llewellyn). Finally, and this will come as a big shock to those of you that are familiar with the ancient form, the segholates are generally pronounced as having one vowel. In some consonant clusters, the second consonant may occasionally require something like another vowel to give it "distinction." This is what eventually led to two vowels. Again, look to David Steinberg.

For those who want a rough guide but don't want Steinberg, please explore the "Biblical Hebrew" article on Wikipedia, which, in my opinion, is fantastic.
