A Gujarat-based couple, from an affluent Indian business family, have donated their lifetime earnings of Rs. 200 crores, or $23 million. They are all set to adopt monkhood. They gave away the wealth during a ceremonial procession, which has drawn backlash on social media. Why did the couple do this? Also, why are they becoming monks? The couple belongs to the Jain community, which has a practice of “Deeksha”. This is a ritual of wealth renunciation. A ceremony where a person formally commits to live an ascetic or spiritually disciplined life. And this is not the only family.
