LAST OF THE MOHICANS - UNCAS & ALICE ROMANCE - ALICE COMMITS SUICIDE RATHER THAN BE MAGUA'S MATE

From Last of the Mohicans. Uncas is the blood son of Chingachgook. He and Colonel Munro's daughter, Alice form a romantic bond that is alluded to in the film. The romance is never explicitly conveyed, but from the direction of the film the two definitely had feelings for each other.


Scene 1 - After hunting a deer, Nathaniel, Uncas and Chingachgook head to Cameron's farm to rest and chat. Cameron's wife asks Uncas why he is still single. Later on Nathaniels says the they will find a Delaware-speaking woman for Uncas and they will settle down and have many strong children. From this scene one can tell that Uncas would be a good and caring father.


Scene 2 - Uncas, Chingachgook and Nathaniel rescue Major Duncan Heyward and Colonel Munro's two daughters, Cora and Alice from a raid by Huron led by the vengeful Magua. As Alice walks up the river bank, Uncas looks at her - perhaps Alice would find him to be as suitable mate?


Scene 3 - After escaping another Huron ambush, Cora, Alice, Major Heyward, Nathaniel, Uncas and Chingachgook find refuge behind a waterfall, but they know that the Huron are close by. Alice walks a little too closely to the edge and is saved by Uncas and they embrace.


Scene 4 - Cora, Alice and Major Heyward are taken to the Huron camp to await their fate. Nathaniel arrives and pleads for their release. The Huron leader says that Alice will go with Magua to be his mate so that Munro's seed doesn't die and that Magua's "heart can be healed." Alice heads north with Magua.


Scene 5 - Nathaniel, Uncas and Chingachgook are attempting to save Alice from the Huron. Uncas reaches Magua's band first and is brutally slain by Magua in hand-to-hand combat and shoved off a cliff. Alice sees how brutal Magua is. She has no desire to be his mate. She looks over the cliff side contemplating suicide... Magua tries to dissuade her by beckoning to her with her slain lover's blood on his hands. She decides she would rather commit suicide than go with him.


One of the most powerful scenes in cinema and not a word was spoken. Uncas was so brave to try and rescue her. Alice so beautiful and resolved not to be chained to a life with someone so brutal.
