MARRAKESH Morocco with KIDS [Ep. 65]

Описание к видео MARRAKESH Morocco with KIDS [Ep. 65]

Nothing prepares you for the markets and main square of Marrakesh. The kids have been excited to come here for a while. Not just because it’s another country, but because it’s in Africa. But I don’t think they knew what they were getting into.

Marrakech is overwhelming in every sense of the word. It’s a full sensory experience. On our first day there the kids were blown away by it. The crazy driving, scooters zipping through narrow alleys, donkeys towing carts, beggars, sellers, snake charmers. After a couple of hours they were completely worn out. Europe has been amazing, but this is a whole other level. I’m glad we didn’t come here first as I don’t think the kids would have taken the massive change so well.

We visited Jamaa el Fna Square and the Medina. The square is very different between night and day. At daytime it’s filled with street vendors, snake charmers, and monkey keepers. At night it turns into a big social gather place, with family picnics set up, dancing, and pop up restaurants.

We also saw Koutoubia Mosque, Ben Youssef Mosque, Bahia Palace, and the Jewish Quarter with synagogue and cemetery. We also took a horse and carriage tour around the old and new city. There’s a recently restored riad in the middle of the medina with a ‘secret’ garden, which is quite a nice oasis in the middle of the otherwise busy marketplace.

The kids slowly got used to haggling, and in the end knew all the sales techniques the sellers used. It was eye-opening for them to see how different everyday life is here. From buying goods, to schooling, to medical treatment and infrastructure.

It does get a bit tiring having to argue or bargain for everything, I don’t think you’d want to stay in the city much longer than a week! On the weekend it got really busy, with all the tourists over from Europe for a couple of days. It almost felt like a theme park at times.
