"He's a Pirate," the main theme from Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), is probably one of the greatest pirate themes ever. It's a nice, swashbuckling tune introducing almost a whole new genre of music, with new chord changes and triplet patterns.

The soundtracks for Disney's first Pirates movie also had a fascinating (and confusing) history. Disney first picked Alan Silvestri, who wrote the music for Back to the Future (1985), Forrest Gump (1994), and later The Polar Express (2004) and the first Avengers movie (2012). Then, Silvestri was fired, and Disney reached out to Hans Zimmer, who is known for composing The Lion King (1994), Gladiator (2000), the Spirit soundtrack (on my channel), and soon Dune Part 2 (2024). However, Zimmer was working on The Last Samurai (2003) at the time. He referred to Klaus Badelt, one of his students, to do the scoring.

Although Hans Zimmer did compose the primary themes for the soundtrack, Klaus Badelt is credited, as he put the themes together into multiple different soundtracks. Later on, Zimmer did the scoring for the next 3 sequels: Dead Man's Chest (2006), At World's End (2007) and On Stranger Tides (2011).
