Strahler order, also known as the Horton-Strahler stream order or simply the stream order, is a numerical system used to classify the hierarchy of streams and rivers within a watershed. It was introduced by the hydrologists Arthur Strahler and Robert E. Horton in the 1950s.

The Strahler order is determined by the pattern of stream tributaries in a river network. It starts with the smallest streams, which are unbranched and have no tributaries, assigned a Strahler order of 1. When two streams of order 1 combine, the resulting stream has an order of 2. When two streams of the same order combine, the resulting stream increases by one order.
