Multiplexing refers to the process of combining multiple signals or data streams into a single signal over a shared medium, allowing the transmission of multiple signals simultaneously. This technique is commonly used in telecommunications and computer networks to optimize the use of available resources such as cables, wireless frequencies, or network links.

There are several types of multiplexing techniques:

Time-Division Multiplexing (TDM): In TDM, multiple signals are transmitted one after another in a round-robin fashion within fixed time slots. Each signal is allocated a specific time slot, and the combined signal is transmitted over the medium. At the receiving end, the original signals are extracted by demultiplexing based on the timing information.

Frequency-Division Multiplexing (FDM): FDM involves dividing the available frequency spectrum into multiple non-overlapping frequency bands. Each signal is allocated a distinct frequency band, and these signals are combined for transmission over the medium. At the receiver, demultiplexing separates the signals based on their assigned frequencies.

Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM): WDM is a technique primarily used in optical fiber systems. It operates similarly to FDM but with optical wavelengths instead of frequency bands. Multiple signals are sent simultaneously through the same optical fiber, each using a specific wavelength of light. This allows for high data transmission rates in optical communication systems.

Code-Division Multiplexing (CDM) or Code-Division Multiple Access (CDMA): CDMA assigns a unique code to each signal to be transmitted. These codes are spread across the entire bandwidth, allowing multiple signals to coexist and be transmitted simultaneously. At the receiver, the signals are separated using their respective codes.

Multiplexing offers advantages such as efficient use of resources, increased data transmission capacity, and reduced infrastructure requirements. It is widely used in telecommunications, networking, satellite communication, and various other fields where the transmission of multiple signals over a shared medium is essential.
