The cause(s) of Alzheimer's Disease is (are) not well understood, and detection can be a bit tricky.

Many times, diagnosis is made on the basis of assessments of a patient's cognitive, memory, and reasoning ablities.

However, there are an assortment of tests -- of widely varying accuracy and efficacy -- that purport to be able to recognize the presence of (or the potential for developing) the condition.

Some of these tests are more psychological / subjective, and aim at gauging mental impairment by asking questions (like "who is the current president?") and specifying tasks (like arranging numbers around a clock face).

Other tests are more physiological / objective, such as those that attempt to diagnosis Alzheimer's (or other dementias) via blood samples, brain scans, eye examinations, lumbar punctures, and so on.

A few of the tests surveyed here are somewhat quirky -- for example, the so-called "peanut-butter-smell test" that has received a bit of press attention lately. Others, chiefly medical autopsies, are fairly well-established mechanisms for confirming the presence of the dread disease.

Sadly, some of the most definitive tests are of little to no use until the disease is either well under way or has already run its full course. Only time -- and additional research -- will tell if some of the less invasive tests will be of use to caretakers, families, medical professionals, and sufferers themselves.
