In 1997, a reproductive disease outbreak in New South Wales and Australia led to the discovery of a new paramyxovirus, known as Menangle virus. The virus had a tremendous economic impact due to the production losses. During the outbreak, farrowing rates decreased from an expected 82% to as low as 38%. Fortunately, all the postnatal pigs seroconverted to the virus within 10 to 14 days and developed a strong immunity to the virus. Persistent infections in swine do not occur, and once the disease becomes endemic in the herd, no further reproductive failures are observed.
