Leica M1 was introduced in 1959 after the M3 and M2. Some consider it the "forgotten M". Following the M1, Leica introduced the MD, MDa and MD2 bodies for scientific purposes. The MD, MDa and MD2 did not come with viewfinder.
A lot of Leica shooters prefer the use of Leica rangefinders, so the cameras without the rangefinders can still be bought without the premium price tags. This can be good for people who shoot a lot of landscape or astro photos when focusing mostly at or near infinity anyway.
