Two young women from Arunachal Pradesh, aged 20 and 21, studying for UPSC exams in Delhi's Malviya Nagar, were subjected to horrific racial abuse by their neighbours following a minor dispute over dust from an air conditioner repair. The attackers used slurs including demands to 'sell momos,' accusations of running a massage parlour, and orders to 'go back to your state.' An FIR has been lodged under Section 79 BNS (intended to insult a woman's modesty), a bailable offence, meaning the couple has not been arrested. The victims are being represented pro bono and have approached the court. Experts emphasise this is not an isolated incident but part of a pattern of racial discrimination faced by people from Northeast India in the national capital. Advocates call for stronger legal recognition of racial discrimination and specific legislation to protect victims, drawing parallels with the Dowry Prevention Act. Both victims have decided to return home following the trauma.
