Settlers' first landing re-enacted in Virginia Beach

150 YARDS FROM CAPE HENRY — Choppy waters and a foreboding grey sky conspired against settlers trying to land on the shore of a new land Thursday.

OK, the dank weather only hampered a re-enactment of the first landing by permanent English colonists.

Imagine what the real trip must have been like.

The hundreds of spectators at First Landing State Park Thursday didn't have to. They sat in bleachers and watched replicas of the Susan Constant, the Godspeed and the Discovery that landed at what was later named Cape Henry on April 26, 1607.

The re-enactments -- and an educational village set up at the park -- are part of a statewide celebration of the 400th anniversary of the first permanent English colonists who settled at Jamestown. "
