What is an Ahupuaʻa

The relationship between Native Hawaiians and the ʻāina (land) is one of respect and care. Hawaiians understood that if they cared for the land, the land would care for them. As some of the best environmental stewards, Hawaiians divided the mokupuni (islands) into areas called moku, or land districts. These larger districts were then divided again into strips of land called ahupuaʻa. Ahupuaʻa were typically pie-shaped land areas running from mountain ridge to ocean reef holding adequate resources for the people living in the area. These ahupuaʻa were almost like small towns or villages containing all the ingredients to live sustainably within their ahupuaʻa.
