This is the first of a six-session study on the Second Book of Maccabees from the Apocrypha. In the mid-second century B.C.E. a group of Jews rose up in revolt against the Seleucid Empire, recaptured Jerusalem and rededicated the Second Temple, leading to the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah and nearly a hundred years of Israel independence. Second Maccabees is the story of that revolt. The study also serves as an introduction to the Apocrypha for those who are not familiar with it. The study uses the commentaries of John R. Bartlett, Daniel J. .Harrington and the New Oxford Annotated Apocrypha (NRSV). This first session covers chapters one and two of the book and includes two letters to the Jews of Egypt and a preface.
