Martian Blues (Bruce Levine original)

Lyrics:

I’m going somewhere no one’s ever been before,
Going there in style, couldn’t ask for more,
Setting out surrounded by the bright white stars
To be the first to set his feet on planet Mars
And teach his eyes to see the many shades of rust
And pace the plains and kick up clouds of Martian dust
…. In the Martian air
…. so pink and rare
…. If I make it there.

Going somewhere looming larger in my mind
I see the blue Earth shrinking, falling far behind
Living in this ship in zero gravity
But still the Earth retains too strong a pull on me
The chatter coming from there is too much to know
I float across and just turn off the radio
-- I can make amends
-- when this journey ends
-- If it ever ends

Why on Earth did I choose
These Martian blues?

Going somewhere dangerous and deadly cold
I’ll have no choice except to set out brave and bold
And leave the earthly comforts of this high-tech box
And step out in a freezing world of dust and rocks
And desolation up and down and everywhere
And look to see if any signs of life are there
…. In the rocks all bare
….. I’ll be well-prepared
…. If I’m not too scared

Going somewhere where I’ll move in leaps and bounds
Suited up and weighing only 60 pounds
So I hope, but I still I have to get there first
For all my travels, I still haven’t faced the worst,
To hurtle down on fire in the entry flight
And pray for a safe touchdown at the landing site
-- See the Earth’s blue light
-- In the Martian night
-- If it all works right

Why on Earth can’t I lose
These Martian blues?
