Trailer - The PRESIDENT BUILDING or PRESIDENT HOTEL was an apartment building in the former Saigon, Vietnam today Ho Chi Minh City. Located 727 Tran Hung Dao Street, district 5. Demolished in 2017.
The former owner millionaire Nguyen Tan Doi built this apartment block in the late 1950th and 1960 it was one of the most modern buildings around, with a roof top swimming pool, a roof fountain and a dancing hall. The building had 530 apartments, 4 elevators. 2 lifts to reach the roof top area directly and a rubbish chute on all floors. It was surrounded by houses, shops and small cafes. In 1964 it was transformed to a BEQ (Bachelor Enlisted Quarters). The American army rented the total building to house their soldiers. The soldiers spent their first days in these blocks or before they we transported back to the USA. The 2 metal staircases in the building were installed 1964 by the American army in the case of fire escape.
In 1975 the war was won by the NVA, North Vietnamese Army and local families moved in.

I discovered the President Hotel in 1997 when I traveled from Germany to Ho Chi Minh City. It was a lively building with friendly residents, vendors, small shops and cafes. An interesting place to shoot video or take photographs.
