Snow tends to catch people off guard in the UK, partly because it’s so unpredictable. When it does fall, it often causes chaos, as the infrastructure and public services aren’t always equipped for it. The relatively mild climate means we don’t have the snowplows and gritting resources you’d find in countries with harsher winters. That said, when we do get snow, it can be pretty beautiful—just not always practical!

A little video of how things went this morning… oh and to make matter worse Storm Bert is also in the mix…

Edinburgh experience snow, it is generally more common in the winter months, from late December through February, although early snowfalls can occur in November or March. Snowfall in the city tends to be more intermittent compared to other parts of Scotland, particularly areas at higher elevations.

Key points about snow in Edinburgh:
1. Timing: Snow is most frequent between December and February, although occasional flurries can happen in late autumn (November) or early spring (March).
2. Intensity: Edinburgh tends to receive lighter, more sporadic snow compared to regions further north or in the Scottish Highlands. The city’s proximity to the coast means it often experiences milder winter temperatures than more inland areas.
3. Impact on the City: Snow can cause some disruption in Edinburgh, particularly if it falls heavily. The city’s hills, such as Arthur’s Seat, can accumulate more snow, while lower areas may experience slush and ice. Snow on roads can affect traffic, but the city’s public services generally respond well, including gritting major roads and pathways.
4. Winter Weather Events: Occasionally, Edinburgh may be affected by larger weather systems or storms (like Storm Bert in 2020) that bring heavier snow and blizzards, which can disrupt transportation and cause temporary closures.

If you’re planning to visit or live in Edinburgh during the winter, it’s good to stay updated on weather forecasts for any snow or extreme conditions.
