Rupicapra rupicapra carpatica in the Retezat mountains
The chamois is native to the Pyrenees, a mountain in southern and central Europe, Turkey and the Caucasus. It lives in steep, uneven, rocky terrain at moderately high elevations up to at least 3,600 m (11,800 feet). In Europe, chamois spend the summer months in alpine meadows above tree-lined avenues, but migrate to elevations of about 800 m (2600 ft) to spend the winter in pine-dominated forests.
