How Retting of Jute Is Done?

Hi Friends,
Jute is an important cash crop and mostly suited for low lying areas. In medium land it is cultivated. But in low lying areas where there is a chance of submergence or inundation for 5-6 days, jute is preferred by the farmers.
Jute after harvesting is kept in the field for 2-3 days for defoliation. Then RETTING is done in nearby stagnant water which requires 20 days.
Salient Features of Retting:
a. Retting is an important agril operation. In this method jute plants (bundles) are kept under stagnant water for at least 20 days.
b. Heavy materials like concrete slab, sandbags should be used for this purpose.
c. Under any circumstances, mud, banana plants should be avoided for this purpose.
d. Retting should always be done in stagnant water. Flowing water is not suitable for this purpose.
e. Because microbial activity is responsible for retting. So avoid flowing water for retting.
f. After proper retting stripping is followed to get good quality jute fibres.
