How To: Concrete Countertop Polished Overlay Test

Polished overlays are commonly used to cover distressed concrete floors. These products are formulated to mimic the appearance of concrete, both by aggregate exposure and shine. They provide a way for a building owner or tenant to achieve a new look for old concrete. Another use for these same products is as a counter top resurfacer. Though the installation process will vary, the aggregate exposure and shine will give the impression of a polished concrete countertop.

The video documents a polish test using a floor overlay as a counter overlay. The process is first attempted with an 80/120 wheel to expose the aggregate. The material’s hardness and irregularity requires an opening cut using an aggressive 30 grit diamond instead. Once the aggregate is exposed, and the surface is made more flat, the polishing process commences the same as if it were a floor.
