Trump signs $400 billion farm bill

(20 Dec 2018) President Donald Trump has signed the massive $400 billion farm bill that reauthorizes agriculture and conservation programs without making any cuts to the food stamp program.
He signed the bill Thursday, hours after the USDA announced its intention to crack down on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program by proposing a regulation to tighten work requirements for recipients of food aid.
Farm bill negotiations stalled for months over House provisions to cuts to SNAP and the Senate's unwillingness to support them.
Trump voiced strong support for stricter work requirements.
USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue said Wednesday the regulation was a tradeoff for Trump's support of the farm bill.
The bill reauthorizes crop insurance and conservation programs, expands support for struggling dairy farmers and legalizes the cultivation of industrial hemp.
