The Altiplano is a vast and high plateau situated between the eastern and western ranges of the Andes Mountains. While covering a wide area that stretches over parts of Bolivia, Peru, and Chile, the bulk of the Altiplano is located in Bolivia. The Altiplano plateau formed with the tectonic uplift of the Andes, and it consists of high mountain peaks as well as lakes of fresh and salt water.
Considering the lack of drainage outlets, all the water gathered in the lowest point of the plateau - the area of Salar de Uyuni.
