The largest-ever seizure of cryptocurrencies in the United States, connected to alleged "pig butchering" frauds that have cost victims billions of dollars worldwide, was disclosed by the Justice Department on Wednesday.
Targeting almost $225 million in bitcoin linked to a vast network of fraudulent investment platforms, federal prosecutors brought a civil forfeiture lawsuit.
Criminal networks that frequently operate abroad deceived victims into thinking they were investing in trustworthy cryptocurrency enterprises.
Shawn Bradstreet, special agent in charge of the U.S. Secret Service's San Francisco Field Office, said in a statement that the $225.3 million in money connected to cryptocurrency investment frauds was the greatest cryptocurrency seizure in the history of the agency.
At least 400 suspected victims worldwide, including dozens in the United States, were linked to the network, according to authorities.
