A Sacramento City Unified School Board meeting erupted in controversy tonight as parents served the board president with a notice of intent to recall over his handling of teacher removals at Phoebe Hearst Elementary School. The conflict began weeks ago when sixth-grade teacher Jeanine Rupert was transferred to another school after removing classroom carpet during a flea infestation, which the district said could have exposed students to asbestos—though testing later found no asbestos was released. Tensions escalated when the district placed teacher Mark Henrikson on administrative leave after he spoke out in support of Rupert. At tonight's meeting, parents and students expressed frustration over losing beloved teachers and the lack of answers from the district. One parent delivered the recall notice to the board president, stating he had "failed to do the job for which you were elected." Emotional testimony included a parent reading a letter from their child describing how Mrs. Rupert made them feel safe and loved. The school board has not yet responded to requests for comment.
