The Great Storm of 1900, a monstrous hurricane that hit Galveston, Texas, on September 8, 1900, claimed more than 6,000 lives and leveled what was then one of the most prosperous cities in the country. It remains the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history. From destruction and devastation came one of the most ambitious engineering projects of its time, the raising of the island and the construction of a seawall that would redefine storm preparedness. Will Wright from the Galveston Historical Foundation talks about Galveston before and after the storm, and how the city has continued to adapt, rebuild, and persevere. We also spoke with Amy Chase from Bolivar Point Lighthouse about their efforts during the Great Storm, which saved 125 people.
