Celje is a town that is situated on the railway like from Zidani Most to Maribor and to Šentilj/Spielfield on the border with Austria. The line from Celje to Velenje is a 37,5 km long regional line. It is a part of the former Lavantine Railway between Zeltweg and Celje, which was built in several phases in the second half of the 19th century. This section was important mainly because of the lignite mines in the Šaleška valley (around Velenje and Šoštanj) and was built and operated by the Steiermärkische Landesbahnen (Styrian Land Railways). It was opened on 29 December 1891. Last year it was 130 years anniversary of the opening of this railway. In 1899, the section was extended to Dravograd, but it was dismantled (between Velenje and Otiški Vrh) in 1968.
