Gershwin (1898-1937) was at 19 working as a rehearsal accompanist on Broadway. He served in that function for a number of Jerome Kern (1885-1945) musicals. I Wonder Why was a tune featured in Kern's 1917 Comedy with Music Love O' Mike. Because Gershwin was a fluent and imaginative pianist, he made ca. 140 piano rolls from 1915-1925 as a sideline, mainly of tunes by others. Gershwin greatly admired the work of Jerome Kern, and made piano roll recordings of several Kern tunes.
