TenneT Control Room of the Future - Matija Naglic, TenneT TSO

The ongoing energy transition towards decarbonised electric power generation sources brings not only environmental benefits to meet the climate goals set by society, but the resulting changes in the power system lead to unprecedented power system behaviour. Together with ever evolving energy markets these further increase the complexity and impose new challenges to power system operation. Based on projected energy scenarios it is expected that typical control room systems and tools, used in year 2021 to operate the power system, will become insufficient for reliable power system operation in the future. To timely address this shortcoming, TenneT TSO started the Control Room of the Future programme to evolve the control room instruments the operators are using to manage the power system. The programme aims to modernise the EMS/SCADA and supporting systems by evolving the existing and developing new technologies and methodologies for reliable operation of the existing and future power system. This presentation outlines the development process of the TenneT R&D roadmap and presents the new functionalities of the control room of the future up to year 2030 and beyond. In brief, it presents the key risks to future system operation based on TenneT NL future energy scenarios and 35 existing or to be developed technologies and methodologies broken down by data, software, outputs, hardware, decision support, training and testing needs, which will help control room operators to monitor, assess and provide decision support to manage these risks on the system in real time.
