Welcome to our Reflective Tape Information Channel. Sponsored by Reflective Incorporated, the Visibility Company. This video covers what types of retro reflective tapes are used on roadways and highways across America, and how these tapes differ from other reflective sheeting.

Retro Reflective tape used for highway signage, also known as sign sheeting, is MUTCD regulated, so virtually all the traffic signs you see, use a bright prismatic sheeting for the background. Type 4 or above films are used for signs on poles. Type 8, Type 9, and Type 11 films are used for overhead signs. Due to the aging of our population, brighter sheeting has been mandated and phased in over the past two decades.

Type 9 and 11 are the newest reflective sheeting's out and feature wide observation angle technology. This allows signs sheeted with these films to be seen at broader observation angles. Type 9 and 11 sheeting's do this by utilizing deeper or modified prisms that put out a wider cone of reflectivity. Subsequently, these signs can be seen reflecting by more viewers than standard films.

Reflective sign sheeting is also different from other reflective tapes in that it is constructed of a tough, long lasting acrylic material. Durable acrylic is used because it lasts longer in static environments like on signs. It also retains its clarity for longer which maintains brightness. Because of this, most sign sheeting's are rated for an eight to twelve year outdoor life.

Chromaticity is another feature of sign sheeting that is regulated. Street and highway signs must meet stringent requirements for color matching. In other words, all blue, red, yellow, green, and white signs must fall within a chromaticity boundary. This is done for uniformity and to maintain daytime and night time recognition.

So in summary, retro reflective sign sheeting is brighter, can be seen from longer distances, reflects at wider angles, lasts longer, and utilizes more vivid and consistent colors than standard reflective tapes.
