In this video, we'll dive into the topic of modern control systems for water treatment equipment and the different sensors used to make them work. With the rapid advancements in computer technologies over the past decade, the demand for intelligent water treatment system controls has grown significantly. We've moved from printed circuit boards to programmable logic controllers that can accept digital and analog inputs, as well as coded SCADA inputs. These PLC controllers are often tied in with interactive touchscreen controls, allowing for remote monitoring and operation via a Building Automation System. If something isn't working correctly, it can be re-programmed without having to replace or upgrade the control circuitry.

To function correctly, PLC controls require inputs from various sensors in the system. In this video, we'll discuss some commonly used sensors such as flow meters, flow switches, conductivity sensors, and ORP sensors. Flow meters use paddlewheels, soundwaves, or magnetic fields to measure and quantify the movement of water through the treatment system, while flow switches only use an on/off paddle switch to make or break a circuit. Conductivity sensors measure levels of dissolved solids, while ORP sensors are used to measure levels of oxidizing disinfectants in the water, such as chlorine, ozone, or chloramine.
