How to Measure Cabinet Door Overlay for Face Frame Cabinetry

If you are converting your old exposed traditional hinges to hidden Euro style hinges or just looking to replace a broken hinge, you will need to know your face frame cabinet door overlay.
The cabinet door overlay is the space that your cabinet door covers the frame or panel of your cabinet, on the hinge side of the door. In this video I will explain how to easily get this measurement.

Here’s what you are going to need:
1. Masking/painter’s tape or a sticky note
2. A tape measure or a ruler

The first step is to close the cabinet door. With the cabinet door in the closed position locate the hinged side of the door.
Once you have located the hinged side of the door, place a piece of tape on the face of the cabinet and flush to the door in a vertical position.
Open the door so you can see the edge of the tape.
Now, measure the distance from the inside edge of the tape to the frame opening. (Normal door overlay is 1/4” to 1-1/2”)
